  11. Get ones . - 5 to 6 tsps Bisibela bath powder - I used readymade MTR .
  12. Take Coriander leaves for garnish
  13. Get 1/4 cup Cashews ghee - fried in
  14. Make ready 2 to 3 tsp Jaggery .
  15. Get Red chilli powder - as per taste.
  16. Prepare 51/2 to 6 cups Water - nearly of water

The healthy version of normal rice bisibelabath is made using broken wheat(also called sambha godhumai in tamil). The name Bisi bele bath itself means hot lentil rice (sambar rice, Karnataka style) I have tried bisi bele bath with a recipe from a cookbook I have. First time, it turned out with cinnamon flavour more. Bisibelabath is a popular recipe in Karnataka.

Steps to make BrokenWheat BisiBelaBath Recipe:
  1. Small onions 1 cup - Normal onions can also be used but shallots give amazing flavour.
  2. Tomatoes chopped 1/2 cup
  3. In a pressure cooker ghee+oil,splutter mustard seeds followed by fenugreek and cashews.
  4. When its slightly brown drop in curry leaves and asafoetida powder and give a stir.
  5. Pop in small onions and mix well till it turns slightly in colour and gives flavour.
  6. Add in tomatoes.Add half of salt now for faster cooking.
  7. Once tomatoes are mushy,add in tamarind water,jaggery and MTR Bisibelabath powder and let it boil for 5 mins.
  8. Now add in the chopped veggies and give a mix.
  9. Next step,add in soaked wheat+dal draining the soaked water.
  10. Check salt.Add red chilli powder for added colour and spice.
  11. Close the cooker lid and cook for nearly 7 to 8 whistles or close to 25 mins in medium flame.
  12. Once pressure is released give a stir and pour 2 to 3 tsps of ghee over it.
  13. Garnish with coriander and fried cashews.Potato chips/raita is a great accompliment to this recipe.
  14. P.S: The broken wheat takes a bit long time to cook but worth the wait I promise ! :)

  16. You can adjust the tsp of bisibela path powder /red chilli powder for more spice versions.
  17. Jaggery gives a good taste and balancing flavour.It is purely optional.
  18. If you find the recipe little watery after opening from pressure,just give a quick boil for few mins and you get the right consistency ! :)

Conventionally we cook rice and dal together in pressure cooker and prepare the bisibelabath gravy in another pan and combine everything together. I learnt this recipe from my mother about ten years back. After several attempts, I am not satisfied with the outcome.
