Naan or fondly known as the naan bread, it has been the forerunner of Indian cuisine around the world. This recipe for Whole Wheat Naan with Garlic & Cilantro Butter brushed on top is my go to, and it's an absolute winner! You can of course buy naan at your grocery store, but homemade is what I always. Since whole wheat flour in particular absorb more liquid and have a hard time growing in volume (using yeast) I tried a total new version of my Naan Bread recipe.

  1. Take whole wheat flour, salt, sugar,baking powder in a mixing bowl. mix it well and add whisked curd and slowly add water as much is needed and make a soft dough. It can be but sticky but don't keep it dry.
  2. Cover the dough with cling wrap or damp cloth. Let the dough rest for 2-3 hrs. This gives best result.
  3. Start making naan with heating a tawa. Let it become very hot,then maintain the flame to medium.
  4. Divide the dough in 4-5 balls. Roll each naan in oval shape or any shape which you like. It should be thicker than roti and then sprinkle some minced garlic and cilantro leaves. Press a bit and then roll again. Flip the rolled naan and apply some water and place it on hot tawa with watered side down.
  5. Cook for 30-40 secs till bubble appears and then flip it and place it on direct flame. Use a tong and flip the naan and cook till the char appears. Once the naan is cooked and slightly browned, remove from flame and brush it with butter.
  6. You can serve with any curry.
