To begin with this recipe, we have to prepare a few ingredients. You can have plain appam using 6 ingredients and 9 steps. Here is how you cook it.

The ingredients needed to make Plain appam:
  1. Make ready 3 cup chana daal
  2. Get 2 cup rice
  3. Take 1 cup udad daal
  4. Get 1 tsp fenugreek seeds
  5. Prepare 3-4 green chilli paste
  6. Get as per taste salt

Grind together long grain rice and cooked rice very well with coconut milk and enough water, to make a batter of dripping consistency. The most popular breakfast dishes in Sri Lanka are the hoppers (appa). These wafer thin, cup-shaped pancakes are made from a fermented batter of rice flour. Appam - the Queen of Kerala is a fermented flat bread made out of Rice and Coconut.

Instructions to make Plain appam:
  1. Soak all ingredients separately for 7-8 hours or overnight
  2. After soak Take mixer grind separately one by one and mix it well.
  3. Before making appam add a pinch baking soda just before preparing appe and combine well.
  4. Heat paniyaram pan / guliyappa pan / appe pan, add add few drops of oil inside the holes.
  5. Now fill the holes with a tbsp of sooji batter in each.
  6. Cover and simmer for a minute or untill appe gets cooked slightly.
  7. Once the base turns golden, flip it over to the other side using a spoon.
  8. Simmer further and cook on low heat until it turns golden browns.
  9. Finally, serve paniyaram or appe with tomato chutney or coconut chutney.

Appam is a quintessential Kerala breakfast and can seem quite tedious to make, especially if you The rice flour needs to be plain rice flour. No need to buy appam powder or any other 'special' kind. Appam is a type of pancake made with fermented rice batter and coconut milk. It is a common food in the South Indian state of Kerala.
